William J. Hammer Collection
The long lost photo of Gustave Whitehead in flight on Aug. 14, 1901 is contained in the "William J. Hammer Collection". The panorama view of the first Aero Club of America Exhibition in New York in Jan. 1906 shows clearly a sign stating:
"Collection of
Pictures
presented by
Wm. J. Hammer"
This sign is located about 3 feet (1 meter) from the Whitehead flight photo:
Furthermore, at the bottom right corner of the photo Hammer's business address,
"159 6th Ave.
New York"
is clearly embossed on the print:
The Hammer Collection is in the posession of the National Air and Space archives of The Smithsonian Institute. The quality of the photos and the fact William J. Hammer was a close friend of the Wrights make it a valued treasure. Ab excerpt of The Smithsonian's description of the Collection's contents can be seen below:

The large-format photos of the Jan. 1906 event are off-limits to researchers. Chief Historian, Tom Crouch has access to them. He published the panorama photo of the exhibition in his 1981 book, "Dream of Wings" Smithsonian Publishing". When the author of this site first met Tom and Whitehead came up, without apparent reason, Tom mentioned he was the only modern-day researcher to have ever viewed the entire Hammer Collection.
