Interview of John F. Fekete by K.I.Ghormley, May, 1948
Affidavit of John F. Fekete, May, 1948
History by Contract p.58:
John F. Fekete, machinist, 611 Hancock Ave., Bridgeport, Ct., lived in the same building as Whitehead and worked with him in the years 1901 and 1903. In May or June of 1901 he says he was present at Sport Hill, 6 or 7 miles from Bridgeport, when Whitehead got his plane 30 feet into the air and traveled 200 feet before landing without damage. The flight started with a downhill run of about 15 feet. Whitehead then turned on the engine whereupon it rose as described. Two others were present; Mr. Roth owner of the farm where the flight took place, and Mr. Cignay who worked on the farm. Fekete had left Bridgeport with Mr. Roth in a car about the same time Whitehead left in the plane however the plane drove more slowly and took longer to arrive. The engine used gasoline, had no magnetos but did have a battery. Fekete had personal knowledge of Whitehead having himself made the crankshaft used in the engine and considered Whitehead to be a good machinist.
