He [Santos-Dumont] will find there [in Saint Louis] several competitors which have already been described.

First the aeroplane, or flying machine, of Monsieur Gustave Whitehead from Bridgeport in Connecticut. With a  length of about 5 meters and 1 meter high, this machine propels itself with two big propellers which are driven by a compound engine of twenty horse power strength. The total weight of the machine is about 127 kilogram. In June last year, with one person on board, the machine has made, it seems, an 'air run test' of two and a half kilometers.
