In Aeronautical Annual, James Means published an article by the British aviation experimenter (& inventor of the machine gun), Hiram Maxim. In it, Maxim disclosed that his "Propeller Type J" had proved to be the most efficient of the ones he'd tried.

 

During his time in Buffalo 1897/1898, Gustave Whitehead had gained posession of a copy of Aeronautical Annual. It's now in the Gustav Weißkopf Museum in Leutershausen, Germany. It In it, Whitehead had placed a mark next to Maxim's "Type J" propeller. Clearly, it's the propeller he used later on his 1901 aircraft (see photographic comparisons below):
