THE BUILDING OF FLYING MACHINES
By HENRI LACHAMBRE Constructer of all the Santos-Dumont Airships
[Another flying machine] is that of GUSTAVE WHITEHEAD, who
recently made a successful flight of half a mile. Like the Lilienthal, Langley
and Chanute machines, Whithead‘s is built on the bird principle. It has
wings like those of a bat, and a spreading tail. The mechanism which oper-
ates the wings also works an automobile attachment which makes it possible
for the machine to travel on the ground. In this way the inventor is able to
get a running start. Mr. Whiteheaad hopes to perfect the machine at an early
date, and to make an aerial voyage from his home in Connecticut to New York.
