Whitehead said he’d been shipwrecked three times, once at Cape Cod, near Boston. It’s unclear if this is how he first entered the USA.

As a sidenote, my grandfather

mentioned that he was shipwrecked as

a young man on three different occasions.

Once in Cape Hatteras, another time off Cape Cod

and again once off Savannah.
