his tendencies showed themselves only in a hobby

for kiteflying and devouring all literature per-

taining to flying and there was very little of it those

days and for him hard to get on account of our

pecunarity. The wings I wrote  you about I mean

those days I never saw him try them and

I don't know today which witnesses I could find.

About Gustave's youth, I only remember his hobby was

to fly little open balloons (parachutes) with attached

cork and candle. Sometimes the police came to our house

for they were afraid that the flying, burning candles might

set fire to filled barns. Frequently father spanked

him for doing this. I may add that Gustave observed

the currents of the air by means of very large kites which

he called "boxer".

Playing with a young friend next to the Main River in Höchst (near frankfurt), Gustave was arrested for capturing birds, tying strings to their feet and doing flight experiments on them. The police reacted to neighbor's complaints that he was being cruel to and "torturing" the birds.
